Our history

How Heard grew

Heard began with a simple belief: every person has a story, perspective, and creative voice worth sharing. What started as a small series of arts workshops has grown into a multidisciplinary nonprofit serving schools, correctional facilities, shelters, recovery programs, libraries, senior communities, and other community organizations across Northern Virginia. Along the way, Heard has delivered more than 1,300 workshops, creating over 11,000 participant experiences through creative writing, visual art, improvisation, storytelling, public speaking, and other forms of artistic expression. While our reach has grown, our mission remains the same—to create spaces where every voice can be heard.

Where the name comes from

To be heard is to be recognized. The period in our logo is deliberate: it is a full stop that turns into sound, with rays radiating outward like amplification. The name describes both what participants do and what happens when a room listens.

Why multidisciplinary arts matter

People express themselves differently. A participant who will not read aloud may fill a page with drawing. Someone who resists writing may thrive in improvisation. By working across creative writing, visual art, improvisation, storytelling, poetry, and public speaking, Heard gives every participant more than one way in — and more than one way to be understood.

Working across disciplines also lets programs adapt to the room: the space available, the time, the materials, and what participants want to make that day.

Equity, dignity, and access

Heard designs programs so that participation does not depend on income, ability, housing status, age, or circumstance. Participants are credited as creators, choose what they share, and shape the direction of the work. Accessibility and consent are part of program planning, not an afterthought.
